These spotty hounds have also been mentioned in the poetic pieces of Jurji Dalmatian, which some historians believes his word resulted in the naming of the breed. Dalmatians also had a great bond with horses in the 16th century. Their sleek and athletic body allowing them to run alongside the horses easily. This was one of the few reasons they were given the role of carriage dogs. Dogs that run along side the carriage to protect the riders and horses from thieves and bandits. Their deep bond with the horses made their owners start keeping Dalmatian puppies in the stables.

Did your Ancestors save lives?

The horse obsession is also part of the reason why Dalmatians are known as firehouse dogs. Firefighters started using horses to pull water to fires. Dalmatians are athletic enough to keep up with horses, which allowed them to help as a siren warning for the horses storming down the path. They also helped keep the horses safe while the firefighters worked, and now have an honorary place in all firehouses and fire trucks because of their ancestors.
