Hi Curious Kids,
Have you ever been to Mongolia? If not, then don’t worry this article is going to give you all the perks of why you should add Mongolia on your travel list! That’s not all… we have a yummy treat that gives you a taste of Mongolian inspired dish.
Mongolian Culture
The nomadic way of life plays a significant role in Mongolian culture. Many Mongols still live in gers, more commonly known as yurts. A ger is a traditional round tent covered in skins, which forms part of their national identity. There are more horses than people in Mongolia. Horses are most prized and are used to travel, herd, hunt and race. Mare milk is used to make the national beverage, airag. Nomads who have many horses are considered wealthy. Mongols have a traditional saying: “A Mongol without a horse is like a bird without the wings.”
Natural Features of Mongolia
The Gobi Desert is a well-known desert in Asia that covers parts of southern Mongolia. The desert was once part of the Mongol Empire. It’s also the location of many important cities along the historical Silk Route. The Erdene Zuu Monastery in Övörkhangai Province is likely the earliest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia. It’s part of the Orkhon Valley Cultura Landscape World Heritage Site. It was initially built with stones from the nearby ruins of the ancient Mongol capital, Karakorum, before its destruction.
